Habitat HQ has been awarded the STAY WYSE Green Initiative Award 2012 at the Industry Awards Luncheon of this year’s World Youth & Student Travel Conference in San Diego, USA.
Through the Green Initiative Award, STAY WYSE would like to recognize the organisation that has made the greatest effort in reducing their environmental impact and included sustainable travel as an integral part of their operating practices throughout 2012.
The Australian hostel based in Melbourne has shown extraordinary commitment in reducing energy and water consumption levels, and has become the only certifiable hostel in Australia to achieve carbon neutral operations.
Habitat HQ has demonstrated to have ambitious long-term green and sustainability policies. Their Green Committee meets on a regular basis to further their efforts and produce new strategies. This made a clear impact on Habitat’s achievements. The hostel became carbon neutral one year ahead of plans.
The winner was selected by the STAY WYSE board from a shortlist of seven organisations.
The award was picked-up by Laura Daly, STAY WYSE Association Manager on behalf of Habitat HQ at the Industry Awards Luncheon of this year’s WYSTC in San Diego, USA
The remaining six shortlisted organisations were:
- Almaa Sintra Hostel, Portugal
- Betws Eco Lodge, UK
- Center for Cultural Interchange, USA
- Swiss Youth Hostel Association, Switzerland
- Tim’s Place, Australia
- The Whistler, Canada
This was the second year the Green Initiative Award was awarded. Last year, the prize went to Sydney Harbour YHA, making it two Australian winners so far.
